Socket not working: what should you check?
A safe checklist for one dead socket, several failed sockets and faults that need an electrician.

Start with the appliance
Test the appliance in a different known-working socket, then test the affected socket with a different low-power appliance. This helps separate an appliance fault from a socket or circuit fault. Do not continue testing if there is heat, discoloration, buzzing, cracking or a burning smell.
Check the consumer unit safely
Look at the labelled switches without removing any covers. A breaker or RCD may have moved to the off or middle position. If it is safe and there are no signs of damage, reset it once. A switch that trips again is reporting a fault and should not be repeatedly forced back on.
One socket or a larger circuit problem?
One failed outlet can be caused by a loose or damaged connection. Several failed sockets may indicate a tripped protective device or a circuit fault. Fixed wiring and socket replacement should be handled by a competent electrician, particularly when the faceplate is damaged or warm.
